Ask Dave

"I've heard that the kombucha will detoxify any container it's in so it needs to be brewed in nothing but clear glass. If not, it will become contaminated "forever." I notice you brew yours in plastic. I'm a bit confused. Can you let me know what you think? Thanks. Michele."

We have tested kombucha tea with many Plastic Brewers and have never had a contamination problem. I do agree that many types of plastic (grade 4 and 5 for example), is not appropriate for brewing kombucha tea. When we first began our brewers were FDA Grade Number 2 HDPE plastic and though they were perfectly safe to brew kombucha tea under sanitary conditions, we chose to seek out better and more innovative options for our customers.

GetKombucha began with the desire to make brewing kombucha tea easy, fun, and safe. We are constantly testing other brewers, shipping solutions, product enhancements and better pricing for our customers. If you have not done so already, NOW is the Time to check out our 2.5 Gallon Lead Free Porcelain Brewer.

In my opinion, this "detoxifying plastic" affect will only occur when the kombucha tea is stored for a very long time, like over a year. And even then, the affects would probably be taste related (just like storing water in plastic for a very long time) than anything else.

You can check out all of our brewers HERE to determine which one of Our Continuous Brewers is the right choice for you.

I personally think that though Plastic Brewing Containers might be safe, why not invest a little more in enjoyment of the brewing process. Our Porcelain Brewers are both elegant and effective.
